Louis Du BOIS , 27.10.1627 Wicres near Lille, France, 23.06.1696 New Paltz, Ulster County, NY, [I1196], N: A money lender and local judge; founder and first elder of the French Reformed Church, New Paltz, He came to America with his family in 1661 and settled briefly in Kingston, NY. Louis fought Indians who had taken his wife, three children, and others captive. He was the leader of the Twelve Men (Duzine) who obtained a patent for land in 1677 that eventually became New Paltz, NY. He returned to Kingston, however, leaving his sons to build the colony. Today a large bronze marker bears his name in the town. Many of his descendants still reside in the area of New Paltz. CONT, A descendant, Garrett A. Hobart, was Vice President of the U.S. during Mc Kinley's first term. Supposedly, to celebrate their victory, the Indians had decided to burn some of the prisoners. Mrs. Du Bois and her baby were selected to be the first victims. As a pole of logs was arranged, she began to sing the 137th Psalm as a death chant. Because she had a beautiful voice, the Indians witheld the fire to listen; they then demanded more. The husbands of the victims and their Dutch supporters heard her singing and found where they were held captive. The Indians were surrounded, killed, and their prisoners released.
