Veröffentlichung: in : "Simiolus, Netherlands quarterly for the history of art", 2017, pp. 141-160
Text:
"The lives and work of the husband and wife team of Hieronymus Cock (1517/18–70) and Volcxken Diericx (c. 1522–1600), printers and publishers in Antwerp, were the subject of a revealing examination in 2013. As the issuers of prints from their Four Winds publishing house, their choice of subjects, artists and printing technique had a major influence on the dissemination of the visual vocabulary of the Renaissance in the Netherlands and its neighbors. As Plantin was to book printing in Antwerp and Ortelius to cartography, so Cock and Diericx were to printmaking. Their high-quality prints were keenly sought after by influential patrons. From the very outset Volcxken Diericx had a hand on the tiller that steered the business from its inception in 1548, and after her partner’s death in 1570 “she firmly guided the publishing house for some thirty years through the most turbulent period in Antwerp’s history.” Her role as a driving force was echoed in Hieronymus Cock’s punning motto: “Let the cook [Cock] do the cooking for the sake of the people [Volck]”
Notiz:
